Aspen View Veterinary Hospital

The mission of Aspen View Veterinary Hospital is to strive for excellence in veterinary care.  This involves a commitment to providing ethical, high quality, and compassionate internal medicine, surgical services, and preventative care medicine.  We are devoted to fostering the human/animal bond.  We are dedicated to excellence in client service by being present for our clients and providing quality care in an efficient manner.  We strive to be leaders and innovators in our approach to veterinary care.  This includes providing a stimulating, challenging and supportive work environment.  We encourage our employees to choose a positive attitude and find fun in their work day while excelling as the professionals that they are.

We have numerous patients that have found a special place in each of our hearts and some of those that we remember for their individual talents.  To name a few, a Siamese that greeted us by barking, numerous dogs that love to carry their leashes for us, and some that inspire us to do what we do.

We offer medical and surgical services for the Pikes Peak Humane Society, Teller County Humane Society, Dumb Friends League, Lucky Dog Rescue, Mile High Lab Mission, Great Dane Rescue, Visla Rescue, and the Mile High Lab Rescue, and  Wild Blue Animal Rescue.

    Dr. Ken Chmelka, Practice Owner

I had the privilege of growing up around a variety of pets.  The fondness encouraged me to become a veterinarian.  I received my Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from Kansas State University in 1983.  Following graduation, I worked at a small animal and equine veterinary hospital in Upper Hutt, New Zealand before coming to Colorado Springs in 1985.  I was soon practicing at Academy Acres Veterinary Hospital as an Associate Veterinarian then quickly moved onto being partial owner in taking care of cats, ferrets, dogs, rabbits, and reptiles.  In March 2000, Dr. Schrepel and I joined partnership to open Aspen View Veterinary Hospital.  I enjoy internal medicine and surgery, as well as working with exotic reptile species.
My wife and I share our home with our grand-dog Meeko, our son's chocolate lab.  When not working with animals I enjoy watching Colorado Avalanche hockey and college football.

After receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Kansas in 1981 I spent 7 years as a practicing Certified Public Accountant working first in Kansas City, Missouri and then in Durango, Colorado.  In 1989 I returned to school at Colorado State University where I completed a second Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Science followed by a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine Degree, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1994.  School was followed by six years working in veterinary practices in Wenatchee, Washington and Colorado Springs, Colorado.  In March 2000, Dr. Chmelka and I joined partnership and founded Aspen View Veterinary Hospital, P.C..
In addition to my commitment to my many canine and feline patients, I also have a fondness for caring for rabbits.  I take a special interest in pain management, and in strengthening the human-animal bond.  My current professional memberships include the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association, the Colorado Springs Area Veterinary Society, and the Cornell Feline Health Center.
I share my life with veterinarian, Dr. Laurie Clauss.  Together we love and attempt to inspire three dazzling adult children as they pursue their passions in universities throughout the country.  We also share our home with a Pit bull mix and Westie mix rescues, and several cats (a number that is ever changing as we both work with rescue groups and the Humane Society).  My wife and I are vegetarians and enjoy exploring new culinary ideas, and travel whenever we get the chance.

"Like many of my colleagues, my passion for veterinary medicine began at a young age. Throughout the years, I developed a sincere appreciation for science and medicine and knew I wanted to dedicate my life to helping animals in need while educating the community. I am a native of Kansas City, Missouri and completed my Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia. After taking a tour and falling in love with "The Mitten," I decided to attend Michigan State University where I earned my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2017. My husband has lived in Colorado for the past few years for work (talk about long distance!), so I always I knew I had the beautiful state of Colorado waiting on me after veterinary school. My special interests include surgery, dermatology, preventative medicine, as well as geriatric medicine.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with our two dogs and four cats, traveling, camping, white water rafting, snowboarding, playing volleyball, being crafty, and trying out new recipes on my husband! I couldn't be happier to begin my professional career serving the Colorado Springs community with my Aspen View family!"

I have always felt a bond with animals, so becoming a veterinarian was an easy choice to make at the ripe old age of 6 years old!  I never could see myself doing anything else and have been living my dream of helping animals ever since.  I am a native of Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  There I obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science in 2006 and a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2010.  After graduation I moved to Colorado Springs and immediately fell in love with my now permanent home.  My first nine years as a Veterinarian was spent working with Banfield and North Academy Animal Hospital.  I am now thrilled to be a member of such a wonderful team at Aspen View Veterinary Hospital.  I am passionate about continuing education and progressing my knowledge to better help my patients. I was the Continuing Education Director for the Colorado Springs Area Veterinary Society from 2015-2017.  My professional interests include surgery, dentistry, internal medicine, dermatology, and I am a fear free certified professional.  In my off time, I enjoy spending time with my husband Jordan, experimenting with new recipes, running and hiking with my rescue dog Gill, and attempting to catch fish.  I look forward to partnering with you to provide the best possible care for your furry friend!

I worked at Aspen View 7 years ago as an assistant, but took some time off and had two kids with my husband, Bryan.  I returned to the practice in 2016 to continue my love for working in the veterinary field. My husband and I practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in our spare time, and I am also a Girl Scout leader and spend a lot of time on the weekends attending events and helping my daughter earn badges. • Kami, Client Service Rep

Being a Wisconsin native I have lived in Alaska, Washington State, Louisiana and
Michigan before settling in Colorado in 1994. As a young girl I rescued a cat and her kittens that were living in a hollowed out tree. That’s when I decided to dedicate my life to helping animals. I received my Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology from Washington State University. I have worked in the veterinary field for over 25 years. Over the years, whether working with rescues, clients or the community, I have taken in numerous special needs cats and strays (dogs and cats) who didn’t have a home to go to. My Heeler mix keeps me active after work wanting to play ball or go on walks. I enjoy gardening, camping, hiking and traveling.
